It may come as a surprise to many that I was bilingual as a child, as I lived in Tripoli, Libya until I was eight years old. My nanny, Maria, hailed from Italy, and since she didn't speak English, I naturally learned both languages. During a visit to Italy a few years ago, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I still understood. However, I struggled to find the right words to respond in Italian.
